Ventspils Free Port Authority
A new grain terminal had to be established at the port of Ventspils. The existing quay did not provide sufficient water depth. Renovation of the quay proved to be rather expensive.
Witteveen+Bos made layout alternatives and the final design and tender documents for loading platforms and mooring dolphins for the new grain terminal. The influence of the dredging activities, necessary to accommodate Panamax vessels at the new terminal, on the adjacent existing quay structure as well as the influence of the grain silos on the stability of the existing quay wall and underwater slopes was determined. Finally a costs analysis was made. Specific supervision has been carried out during the construction phase. The water depth is 16.5 meter and the vessels that can be accommodated have a length of 240 meter.
The existing quay wall turned out to be very unstable, which required special attention during the design activities and construction period. The design was dominated by the high ice loads induced by drifting ices in the harbour of Ventspils.
