Ventspils Nafta Terminals
Late August 2011 Witteveen+Bos Latvia was requested by Ventspils Nafta Terminals (VNT) to facilitate a HAZOP study for a scrubber and a butanization system at their terminal at Ventspils.
The study was carried out in a one week session with active participation of the client’s and designer’s representatives and guided by an experienced Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) leader from Witteveen+Bos. During this study the process was divided into logical nodes and each node was systematically verified for possible causes of a hazardous situation, and potential consequences were identified. Available safeguards were listed and the probability of the risk and subsequent damages were also assessed. Recommendations were established by the team where needed.
At the end of the session, the representatives of the client noted that the HAZOP session had led them to a better understanding of the technical details and the performance of the verified systems. Aside from the HAZOP study results, this 'synthetic experience' side-effect will help our client to recognize and eliminate possible hazardous situations during the daily operation of the terminal.
